2. PMOs and Project Management are hot topics these days. In order to understand and make a decision on the question, we need to understand and answer the following questions:
a. What is Project Management?
i. What do we mean by establishing formal Project Management methodology?
b. What are PMOs?
i. What is a PMO?
ii. Why are there different models of PMO Infrastructures?
iii. Will the different infrastructure models of PMOs be the answer?
iv. Can we really establish a PMO before introducing Project Management?
3. What are the Best Practices with regards to establishing PMOs versus Project management Models?
a. The different models of Project Management and PMO Infrastructures
i. There are several approaches to implementing Project Management and PMOs, and therefore, a great need to understand what works, and what doesn’t, as well as assessing adoption and soundness of processes.
ii. We see different Project Management methodologies and practices, as well as PMOs in all shapes and sizes, in a variety of organizations. We have encountered organizations that have very informal models of project management, to very formal and established models, with and without PMOs. We have seen a variety of PMO infrastructures, from a PO unit, to a divisional PMO, to the large corporate PMO, and from centers of excellence, to consulting models, to complete control and centralized models.
