PMOs - What are they? The various Infrastructure types of PMOs and Best Practices
Introduction - Brief overview of the topic in lecture format.
1. PMOs are a hot topic these days. The 3 main questions that we will answer are:
a. Why are there different infrastructure models?
i. Which model is the right one?
b. Are PMOs supposed to have a life cycle?
c. What are the Best Practices with regards to PMOs?
2. Why are there different models of PMO Infrastructures?
a. We see PMOs in all shapes and sizes in a variety of organizations, from a PO unit, to a divisional PMO, to the large corporate PMO, and from centers of excellence models to complete control and centralized models.
b. Which model is the right one?
3. Are PMOs supposed to have a life cycle?
4. We see some PMOs that seem to be stable, others that change over time, some that rise, others that have died or are on their way out, and others that have come back to life once again.
5. What are the best Practices with regards to PMOs? This will be answered at the end of the session in lecture format.
The format will be interactive and working in groups
1. I will conduct a live survey by collecting attendees' feedback on their actual experiences, of all their different types of PMOs, their own PMO structures, as well as their feedback on what has worked and what has not worked. Some will be asked of the whole audience (such why their popularity), some individual questions to be answered (such as why they think they are important or not), and other information will be collected within their groups.
2. We will then share the information collected.
3. This will be followed by an exercise, whereby they describe what they think a PMO should be, how it should be started, what kind of structure and format, etc... A formal exercise description will be given.
4. Then each group will present their findings and their vision of the ideal.
