A Building Isn’t Sustainable Unless It Is Accessible: Description: Many developers, those working on government and leading edge private sector buildings are requiring building design meet energy and environmental rating systems. The objective being building performance improvement with significant reductions in building environmental impact as well as the improvement of indoor environment for its inhabitants. There have been several standards established to this end. Some local governments are creating custom standards based on their particular needs to address sustainability within their communities. Green building compliance is emerging in environments that are also legislated to meet standards related to accessibility for those with disabilities, particularly in public facilities. Current building codes are being seen as a minimum standard for addressing growing accessibility issues, and as such there is proposed legislation to go beyond the existing code. The challenge is now to design buildings that reduce their building footprint for environmental concerns but at the same time provide increased space for persons with mobility limitations. This engaging workshop will explore these challenges and offer methods to use sound project management practices, bringing the various stakeholders in accord, enabling a reasonable solution to satisfy both sustainability and accessibility requirements in public buildings.
